Александр Макколл Смит (Alexander McCall Smith, род. 24 августа 1948 г. в Булавайо, Зимбабве).
Учился сначала в Зимбабве, затем в Шотландии. Занимал должность профессора медицины Эдинбургского университета. В этой роли поехал в Ботсвану, где помогал созданию специальной кафедры в университете. В 2006 году был удостоен звания «Выпускник года» Эдинбургского университета. Также, по совместительству, путешественник и музыкант-любитель, играющий на фаготе в "Действительно Ужасном Оркестре".
В настоящее время живет в Эдинбурге.
Книги Александра Маккол Смита переведены на 26 языков. В 2003 г. он получил высшую награду Соединенного Королевства за юмористическую прозу - "Сага" и в том же году стал победителем конкурса на Премию Гленфидиш в области литературы.
Литературную славу ему принесла серия романов о женском детективном агентстве в далекой Ботсване, о проницательной и обаятельной женщине по имени Мма Рамотсве, которая мечтает "помогать людям и решать их проблемы".
Романы этой серии были переведены более чем на тридцать языков и стали бестселлерами во многих странах мира.
Права на экранизацию первого из них приобрел знаменитый Энтони Мингелла, режиссер "Английского пациента", "Талантливого мистера Рипли" и "Холодной горы".

An adaptation for the screen The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency was made in 2007, directed by Anthony Minghella (who also co-wrote the screenplay), and scripted by Richard Curtis. A movie for TV was made jointly by the BBC, HBO and some other production companies. It was broadcast in the UK on BBC1 television on Easter Sunday 23 March 2008
