It was an hour before lunch. Jimmy, a little bunny, was playing with his two older brothers.
До обіду лишалася ще година. Маленький кролик Джиммі грався зі своїми двома старшими братиками.
“I really feel like eating something sweet,” said Jimmy suddenly.
— Як мені зараз хотілося б чогось солоденького, — раптом сказав Джиммі.
“We can’t eat candy before lunch,” said the oldest brother. “You know we’re not allowed, Jimmy.”
— Нам не можна їсти цукерок перед обідом, — відповів старший брат. — Ти ж знаєш, що це заборонено, Джиммі.
“I like apples and grapes,” said the middle brother. “They’re sweet and tasty.”
— Я люблю яблука й виноград, — мовив середульший брат. — Вони солодкі та смачні.
Jimmy curled his lip. “Yuck, I don’t like eating fruits.”
Джиммі закопилив губу:
— Феее, не люблю фрукти.
Then he whispered, “Guess what? I saw that Mom bought some new candy yesterday. I’m going to take some. Who’s joining me?”
Потім він зашепотів:
— А знаєте що? Я бачив, що мама вчора купила нових цукерок. Піду візьму собі трохи. Хто зі мною?
“Not me,” said his oldest brother and went back to his toys.
— Не я, — старший брат повернувся до своїх іграшок.
“I’m not coming either,” replied his middle brother.
— І не я, — підтримав його середульший брат.
Jimmy waved his hand and left the room.
Джиммі махнув рукою та й пішов з кімнати.
Slowly, he made his way to the kitchen, looking around to check that nobody was watching.
Поволі він попрямував на кухню, озираючись навсібіч і слідкуючи, щоб ніхто його не помітив.
The table was already prepared for lunch.
Стіл уже був накритий до обіду.
Each bunny had his own plate. The oldest brother had the blue plate, and the middle brother had the green one. The orange plate was for Jimmy.
У кожного кролика була своя тарілка: у старшого брата — блакитна, у середульшого — зелена, а помаранчева тарілка належала Джиммі.
In the center of the table was a big bowl filled with fresh vegetables. There were cucumbers, carrots, tomatoes, and some cabbage.
У центрі столу стояла велика чаша, повна свіжих овочів. Тут були огірки, морква, помідори, червоний та жовтий перець і капуста.
Jimmy scrunched his nose.
Ugh! I’m not going to eat THAT, he thought.
Джиммі скривився. «Фу! Я ЦЬОГО не їстиму», — подумав він.
He went over to the cupboard and spotted the bag of candy. But the cupboard was so high that Jimmy was unable to reach it.
Він підійшов до шафи й угледів торбинку цукерок. Але шафа була така висока, що Джиммі ніяк не міг її дістати.
He took one of the chairs and moved it nearer to the cupboard. He climbed up onto it, but he still wasn’t able to reach the shelf!
Він узяв один зі стільців і підсунув його ближче до шафи. Джиммі видерся на нього, але й тепер не зміг дотягнутися до полички!
Jimmy got back down and looked around again. This time, he took a large empty pot and turned it upside down. He put the pot on the chair and then climbed up.
Джиммі зліз із стільця і знову озирнувся. Цього разу він узяв великий порожній горщик і перевернув його догори дном. Він поставив горщик на стілець і заліз на нього.
Now, he was able to see the highest shelf. In the far corner of the shelf, there it was a huge bag full of candy! But… he still wasn’t able to touch it. He needed to be a tiny bit higher.
Тепер він бачив найвищу полицю. У дальньому її кутку стояла величезна торба, повнісінька цукерок! Але… він і зараз не міг дотягнутися до неї. От якби бути хоч трішечки вищим!
What else can I use? thought Jimmy while getting down. Suddenly, he saw his mom’s huge cookbook.
«Що б іще підмостити?» — подумав Джиммі, спускаючись вниз. Раптом він побачив мамину величезну кулінарну книгу.
“That’s exactly what I need!” he said happily as he grabbed the book.
— Саме це мені й потрібно! — радісно вигукнув він і схопив книгу.
He put the cookbook on the upside-down pot and slowly climbed up. Now he was able to touch the shelf.
Кролик поклав книгу на перевернутий горщик і поволі видерся на неї. Тепер він міг доторкнутися до полиці.
But as Jimmy reached for the bag of candy, the chair began to rock. Jimmy quickly lost his balance and fell flat on the ground.
Але коли Джиммі потягся до торби з цукерками, стілець захитався. Джиммі втратив рівновагу й гепнувся на землю.
The pot fell next to him with a loud bang. The cookbook came next, and it landed right on poor Jimmy’s head.
Горщик голосно загрюкотів поряд. А кулінарна книга впала просто на голову бідолашному кроленяті.
Jimmy looked up at the cupboard and it seemed as if it was getting higher and higher. When he tried to stand up on his feet, he felt dizzy and had to sit back down.
Джиммі дивився на шафу, і йому здавалося, що вона стає все вищою і вищою. Коли він спробував стати на ноги, в нього запаморочилося в голові, і йому довелося знову сісти.
At that exact moment, his two older brothers came into the kitchen.
“What was that noise,” asked the oldest brother, “and where’s Jimmy?”
Саме в цю мить до кухні зайшли двоє його старших братиків.
— Що тут за ґвалт, — запитав старший брат, — і де Джиммі?
Jimmy waved his hand. “I’m here!”
Джиммі замахав рукою:
— Я тут!
“How did you get so tiny?” asked his middle brother.
— Як це ти став таким крихітним? — запитав середульший брат.
Only then did Jimmy realize why everything looked so big. He had become as small as a mouse!
Тепер тільки Джиммі зрозумів, чому все здавалося таким велетенським. Він зробився малесеньким, мов мишеня!
“I just climbed up to get some candy,” he cried, “and then I fell down.”
— Я просто дерся вгору, щоб дістати цукерок, — закричав він, — і впав.
“Maybe that’s what caused you to become so little!” exclaimed the middle brother.
— Може через це ти й став таким маленьким! — вигукнув середульший брат.
“Oh, no! Will I stay this small forever?” Jimmy began crying.
— О, ні! Невже я назавжди залишуся таким крихітним?— заплакав Джиммі.
“Don’t cry,” said the oldest brother. “We will figure something out. Let’s just clean up before Mom comes in.”
— Не рюмсай, — сказав старший брат. — Ми щось придумаємо. Давайте для початку приберемо тут, доки мама не прийшла.
Just as they finished putting everything back in its place, their mother walked into the kitchen.
Саме тоді, коли вони закінчили розкладати все по своїх місцях, мама зайшла до кухні.
“We’re going to eat lunch soon. Where’s Jimmy?” Jimmy hid behind his older brothers.
— Скоро будемо обідати. Де Джиммі? — Джиммі заховався за своїх старших братів.
“Uh, uh…” stuttered his middle brother while thinking of something to say.
— Е-е, е-е… — мимрив середульший брат, метикуючи, що б відповісти.
But the older brother was very smart. “Mom, if someone wants to grow quickly and be tall and strong, what would he need to do?” he asked.
А от старший брат був дуже кмітливий.
— Мамо, якщо хтось хоче швидко вирости і стати високим і сильним, що йому слід робити? — запитав він.
“He needs to eat his fruits and vegetables,” she answered. “They contain lots of vitamins and minerals that help the body grow faster.”
— Йому слід їсти фрукти та овочі, — відповіла мама. — Вони містять багато вітамінів і мінералів, які допомагають організму швидше рости.
“Now, you can sit down at the table and I will call Dad and Jimmy,” their mother said and walked out of the kitchen.
— Ви вже можете сідати до столу, а я покличу тата й Джиммі, — сказала мама, виходячи з кухні.
The oldest brother turned around to Jimmy. “Quick! You have to eat your fruits and vegetables.”
Старший брат повернувся до Джиммі:
— Швидко! Тобі треба їсти фрукти й овочі!
“No way!” screamed Jimmy, “I don’t even like fruits or vegetables!”
— Ні за що! — закричав Джиммі, — Я не люблю овочів та фруктів!
“Do you want to stay this way forever then?” his middle brother asked.
— То ти хочеш залишитися таким назавжди? — запитав середульший брат.
“Of course not!” replied Jimmy.
— Звичайно ні! — відповів Джиммі.
“So eat some vegetables,” said the oldest brother. “Maybe you’ll even like them.”
— Тоді їж овочі, — сказав старший брат. — Можливо, вони тобі навіть припадуть до смаку.
He took a carrot from the bowl on the table and slipped it in Jimmy’s mouth.
Він узяв морквину з чаші й запхав її Джиммі в рот.
“Ummm… this is sweet and tasty,” Jimmy said as he chewed his carrot with his strong, white teeth.
— Мммм… вона солодка й смачна, — сказав Джиммі, жуючи морквину своїми міцними білими зубами.
All of the sudden, he felt a strange tingly feeling spreading all over his body—it was just like magic.
Раптом він відчув дивне поколювання по всьому тілу — це було схоже на магію.
“Jimmy, look! You’ve grown a bit!” shouted the oldest brother.
— Джиммі, поглянь! Ти трохи підріс! — вигукнув старший брат.
The middle brother gave Jimmy a juicy cucumber from the bowl. “Here, eat something else,” he said.
Середульший брат простягнув Джиммі соковитий огірок з чаші:
— Ось, з’їж іще щось, — мовив він.
With every bite, he felt his body getting stronger and stronger. He was growing!
З кожним шматочком Джиммі відчував, як його тіло стає все сильнішим і сильнішим. Він росте!
In the end, Jimmy ate some cabbage, a tomato, a red pepper, and a yellow pepper, and for dessert, he ate a lovely, juicy pear.
Іще Джиммі з’їв трохи капусти, помідор, червоний і жовтий перець, а на десерт — чудову соковиту грушу.
“You’re finally yourself again,” the oldest brother shouted and ran over to hug Jimmy.
— Нарешті ти знову став собою, — вигукнув старший брат і підбіг, щоб обійняти Джиммі.
His middle brother hugged him, too. “How are you feeling now?” he asked.
Середульший братик приєднався до обіймів.
— Як тепер почуваєшся? — запитав він.
“I feel great and full of energy,” Jimmy answered. “And you know what? These fruits and vegetables are really tasty. I should have tried them before!”
— Чудово, я сповнений енергії, — відповів Джиммі. — І знаєте що? Ці фрукти й овочі справді смачні. Варто було спробувати їх раніше!
All three brothers began to laugh loudly and jump around.
Братики почали всі втрьох голосно сміятися та стрибати.
A few minutes later, Jimmy’s parents entered the kitchen.
Через кілька хвилин до кухні зайшли батьки Джиммі.
“Great, everyone’s here,” said Dad.
— Чудово, ви вже тут, — сказав тато.
“I’m happy that everyone’s in such a good mood,” said Mom. “Don’t forget to wash your hands!”
— Я рада, що всі в такому гарному настрої, — мовила мама. — Не забудьте помити руки!
The happy family sat around the large table and began eating all the tasty things there. Even Jimmy finished his whole plateful.
Щаслива родина сіла за великий стіл і почала їсти всю смакоту, що була на ньому. Навіть Джиммі з’їв повнісіньку тарілку.
From that day on, Jimmy liked eating all his fruits and vegetables. Sometimes, he still ate candy but only a little and only after his meals.
Відтоді Джиммі полюбив фрукти та овочі, і завжди з’їдає їх усі. Іноді він може поласувати й цукерками, але зовсім трішки, і тільки після їжі.
